Coronavirus and Robbery
Coronavirus worries and the pain attached to the lockdown order in most states of the country are not the only things Nigerians have to worry about as armed robbery has gotten a boost in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
This is the third week of the lockdown order issued by the President, requiring that residents of the FCT, Abuja, Lagos and Ogun States stay in their homes to avoid further spread of the Coronavirus.
This order immediately took its toll on business activities and all other areas of the lives of those who reside in theses three locations, and later spread to other states as well.
The shade of pains the lockdown order is inflicting on some residents of Abuja might be different from those others are experiencing with the boost to armed robbery.
Some residents of Piwoyi, along Airport Road, Abuja who spoke to Everyevery.ng said, they can no longer go out with their phones and reasonable about of money in recent times.
A resident of the area who introduced herself as Mrs Wunmi said young men in a group of two or three now approach residents on pathways and rob them of their valuables.
” If you are going out to buy something in the neighbourhood quickly, you will see some young-looking guys telling you to bring your phone and money, no matter how little the amount is. Though they will not harm you if you do as they command, this is becoming worrisome because they now do this even during the day.”
She added, ” I believe that it is these guys that ride Okada and those doing menial jobs and have been forced to sit at home that are doing this because they are hungry.”
According to Mrs Wunmi, going out both day and night in the area is now a dreaded thing to do, with only those who are bold going out for little household purchases. She also said that people have resolved in going out in groups which is not advisable at this time.
She called on security agencies to come to the aid of the community residents before the situation gets worse.
