Bayero University Kano (BUK) during its 35th convocation ceremony scheduled to hold between the 10th and 15th June 2019 is set to have 105 first class graduands from its first-degree graduands. 6,174 first degree graduands are part of the total 9,751 that will partake in the convocation ceremony.
The university Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Yahuza Bello breaks down the number while addressing reporters in his office. He said the total 9,751 is made up of 6,174 first degree graduands, 107 Ph.D. graduands, 2,269 Masters Degree graduands and 1,039 Post-graduate diploma degree graduands. Prof. Bello also pointed out that there was an 11 percent increase compared to the number of students that graduated in the last academic session. In his words, a blind undergraduate of the Department of Special Education, Abdullahi Umar Abdullahi, is graduating with a Second Class Upper. #17 million is also said to be spent on awarding scholarships to indigent students.
The prestigious University, BUK, located in the Kano Emirates is said to have lowered its UTME cut-off mark. The Vice-Chancellor said this move is to embrace tertiary education for all including the blind. The cut-off mark is now 150, down from its previous 180. The VC went on to say that the University Senate and Governing Council have decided to honor four individuals in the ceremony. Professor Abdulkadir Damgambo who retired from the University service in 2010 after serving for 37 years will be conferred with Emeritus Professorship.
The graduands which include the 105 first class graduates studied courses in various departments in the institution. Some of the courses offered include Accounting, Adult Education, Anatomy, Arabic Studies, Agricultural Engineering, Architecture, Biochemistry, and Biological Science. Other courses offered are French, Geology, Hausa, Industrial Chemistry, Information Technology, Electronics, English Language, Estate Management, Mass Communication, and so on. Meanwhile, the University has announced on its website that Msc/MA graduands and Ph.D. graduands are to pay for their gowns. BUK MSc and MA graduands are to pay #10,000 for the gown, while Ph.D. graduands are to pay #17,000. A sum of #8,000 is to be paid for certificate, the book of proceedings and scroll which is being paid at the University Bookshop, New Campus, as from Thursday 6th of June, 2019.
