Suddenly, the hashtag ASUU Strike started trending following the recent development regarding President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration’s failure to fulfil its promise to the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
What triggered the whole controversy is after agreeing to the terms and conditions presented by the union to Federal Government, the reverse was the case when FG decided to remit half of the salaries to lecturers without other attachments.
What caught everyone’s attention is the N121,000 payment forwarded to Professors’ accounts after 8-9 months of pressure on the Government to accept the demands.
Sadly, the Ministry of Education has refused to officially key into the matter of half salary payment and when approached by newsmen for feedback, it was reported that the spokesperson to the Minister simply redirected the media to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
The salary is just one aspect of the agreements among the involved parties. Meanwhile, the ASUU strike may resume as the union’s executives have already summoned its members for an emergency meeting to forge the way forward.
