You have not tour Nigeria if you haven’t been to Adamawa State which is nicknamed ‘Land of Beauty’. It is one of the thirty-six states that constitute the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It was formerly known as Gongola State (out of which Taraba State was also created). Adamawa is located in the Northeastern part of Nigeria. It’s capital is Yola.
The Land of Beauty is the eight largest states in Nigeria in terms of area which is 36,917 kilometer square. There are 3,178,950 people in the state according to 2006 population census. There are 21 Local Government Areas in the state so there are enough sites to visit. The LGAs includes; Demsa, Fufore, Ganye, Girei, Gombi, Guyuk, Hong, Juda, Lamurde, Madagali, Maiha, Mayo-Belwa, Michika, Mubi North, Mubi South, Numan, Shelleng, Song, Toungo, Yola North and Yola South. Get your sacks ready as you’ll return home with bag loads of food crops such as rice, guinea corn, millet, maize and yam because the people are predominantly farmers.
PLACES TO VISIT
Mubi is one of the popular places to visit in Adamawa State. It’s nickname ‘’Sabon Dale’’ and its motto is ‘’Home of Peace’’. Its peace was threatened few years ago by the insurgents but peace has been restored so no cause for alarm. Mubi town is currently home to three higher institutions of learning. They are; The Federal Polytechnic Mubi, College of Health Technology (Mubi campus), and Adamawa State University, Mubi. Mubi is also the home of the state farmers international cattle market popularly known as ‘Kasuwan Shanu’ or ‘Kasuwan Tike’ situated at the center of the town. You’ll surely return home with some beef for your favorite delicacies.
Another site of interest is Sukur. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site located on a hill above the village of Sukur in the state. It situates in the Mandara Mountains, close to the Cameroon border. Its UNESCO inscription is based on the cultural heritage, material culture, and the naturally-terraced fields. Sukur is the Africa’s first cultural landscape to receive World Heritage List Inscription.
One of the best private-owned Universities is situated in the state. American University of Nigeria (AUN) is a private university that offers American style higher education programs at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.
It was founded in 2004 by Atiku Abubakar (former Nigeria Vice President and Presidential candidate) and it is the only American style University in Sub-Saharan Africa. The university has top learning facilities including a top e-Library. On top of the University’s board are Bishop Desmond Tutu, Bishop Mathew Kukah and Dr. Bamanga Tukur.
Other places to visit are;
Nuhu Auwalu Wakili’s Palace, Lamido’s Palace, Kamale Mountain Peak in Michika, Three Sisters Rock in Song LGA, and the confluence of Rivers Benue and Gongola in Numan Uba.
