One of the important parts of a church worship service is paying of tithe and offering. It is as important as other parts of the service even though there has been a lot of discourse concerning the payment of tithe in the Nigerian society.
Well, it is another Sunday even though few worshippers could make it to church due to the lockdown in many parts of the country. Many haven’t paid tithe and offering as they used to do before. We just have to take a look at the ways people give out their money in congregations.
5 Types of Tithe and Offering Payers in Nigerian Churches
There are few Nigerian churches where you don’t pay tithe and offerings. Here are some types of tithe and offering payers in churches where it is seen as part of worship which transforms to blessing for the payers.

- The Flamboyant Payers: These are the rich and wealthy ones who see giving as worship and will do it with style. They flaunt their currencies which might be the highest denomination around. There’s no hiding of money, they make sure people around them see it and know there’s enough in their pocket.
- The Hidden Payers: These set of people knew they have to give bigger but for situations, they have to give what is in their hands. They might not bring out their money until the offering basket gets to them. Once it is around, they fold the money so their neighbor won’t know what they’ve dropped even though it might be scriptural to pay like that.
- The Transfer Payers: These set of people are the digitalized people you would see in churches. They prefer to pay by using their mobile money apps even though some use it as an avenue to pay. Once it is offering time, they keep pressing their phones as the church’s account number is displayed on the projector.
- The Bureau De Change Payers: These set of people pay their tithe and offerings but will certainly ask for change. They have calculated their offering so for them to do other things that day, they have to receive change. They talk to the church ushers quietly to help get their change and they might nearly bite off the ushers’ ear by doing this lol!
- The Coded Payers: These people use an envelope to pay their tithe and offering. It is better if the money their dropping is unknown to anybody. Some use it as an opportunity not to drop anything. They just drop the envelope with joy as they dance very hard which is seen as a substitute to the money they couldn’t pay.
