England and Tottenham Hotspur skipper Harry Kane has said Premier League players have come under “unfair criticism” during this coronavirus pandemic. The spread of the virus has made football placed on a standstill with all elite competitions placed on suspension including the Uefa Champions League and the Europa League as well. Health secretary Matt Hancock said last month that players should “take a pay cut and play their part”.
Harry Kane said in an interview expressing his grieve as he said: “We’ve shown we’re doing everything we can to help support the NHS, charities and everyone who is struggling during this pandemic.” “We came under a bit of scrutiny and probably unfair criticism at times,” Harry Kane added.
Harry Kane also paid tribute to all the health workers starting from the delivery drivers to care workers and doctors to shop workers, they have been amazing he said. Kane also said: “Everyone is doing so much work behind the scenes that not everyone sees.”
Last month Premier League players launched a collective initiative to help generate funds for the National Health Service and distribute them “where they are needed most. On 31 March, Tottenham announced that all 550 non-playing staff were taking a 20% pay cut, initially for two months.
Tottenham Hotspur reversed the decision to use the current job retention scheme for some non-playing staff. All of this is pointed at football players and clubs spending, Danny Rose earlier last month said players should not be forced to accept pay cut.
Harry Kane has not agreed with Danny Rose to say players are the scape goats in the whole of this coronavirus outbreak. Indeed players should help but they should not be forced into doing so by anybody.
