Two yet to be identified young lovers have reportedly committed Suicide in Okija, Anambra State because their parents refused to allow them to get married.
In a suicide note that was found beside their dead bodies, they expressed displeasure over what they tagged “Racism in disguise.”
The suicide note which was posted by a Twitter user @harrisonmbamara, reads “How can we separate after 6 solid years of dating and getting used to each other, Is it a crime hail from Okija, Anambra state?
We are both are from Okija in ihiala local government area, Anambra State, Nigeria.
We have already wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, we have already planned our future together.
We have already struggled to secure a better future together, now that things are gradually turning around for us, they are saying we can’t get married, all because of Osu caste, all because of an ancient belief that has been abolished in other villages.
The people of Okija choose to live in the past all as a result of ignorance that God created everyone equally.
So why would human beings discriminate just because of the ignorance of our forefathers, why will we keep suffering for what we know nothing about, for something we didn’t do.
why do we still choose to stay in the dark, this is racism in disguise, yet we want to be treated equally in the Whiteman land, a charity they say begins at home.
We made up our minds to end it all because we can’t stay without each other, Say no to osu caste.
Below are some of the comments about the young lover’s decision to commit suicide.
@Amin6rd “They could’ve just run somewhere far and get married”
@takemeawaywit1 “I no need run If you can’t bless my marriage than leave me alone”
@PRofLagos “So disheartening, this has to stop. Everyone should be allowed to spend forever with whom they choose. And also, people should understand that taking their own lives isn’t a solution at all.
@Dorian820 “Based on Community Standards The Human Species have Made it a normal thing now to Commit suicide and to leave a note as to why they did it….it helps them soothe their own conscience….it’s a personal decision…..based on the level of the Understanding of the deceased.
Findings by Everyevery.ng revealed that the Osu caste system is an ancient practice in Igboland that discourages social interaction and marriage with a group of persons called Osu also known as outcast in Igbo.
