A Nigerian woman based in the UK has expressed her outrage after discovering her wedding photo was used in a Nollywood movie without her consent. The filmmakers reportedly edited the picture by replacing her and her husband’s faces with those of the movie’s actors.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the woman criticized the unprofessionalism of the filmmakers. In her post, she wrote:
“Huge chunk of those in the Nigerian entertainment industry (and the whole country tbh) have an affinity for mediocrity. Shoddy attempt at creativity and just overall unprofessionalism. Cos why is my wedding picture in a movie with faces of the actors plastered on our faces?”
The woman revealed she made multiple attempts to contact the movie’s writer or producer but received no response. Frustrated by the lack of accountability, she added:
“I’ve tried my best to reach out to the writer(?) of the movie, all to no avail. As a person in such public space, why are you unreachable? Just senseless on all fronts.”
Her post quickly gained traction, sparking debates among Nigerians. Many social media users condemned the filmmakers, questioning why they didn’t create an original photoshoot or at least seek her permission.
One commenter wrote, “This is unacceptable. How hard is it to get actors to pose for a wedding shoot? This reflects poorly on the industry.”
This incident has reignited conversations about copyright, professionalism, and ethics in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, as many call for stricter regulations to prevent such breaches of privacy and intellectual property.
