The university is a higher institution for education where students of various walks of life go to acquire universal information.
Life doesn’t end at the university, there’s a whole other hurdle out there (the real world) waiting to be crossed when you’re done. However, there are essential skills necessary for survival after life in the uni that cannot possibly be acquired in the classroom of a university. Here are two basic skills you may need in the future which the university fails in delivering.
1. Selling
Selling your ideas is a skill which if one doesn’t posses could cause them to miss plenty openings and opportunities. An idea or a concept is usually bought in regard to your presentation, your confidence and your ability to convince a crowd or your boss why that idea is worth a second look. This is certainly a skill that cannot be learnt in a regular university classroom. However, it can be perfected by an individual.
2. Networking
Meeting new people in the university and securing connections is very underrated in Nigeria. People need to learn how to interact and establish relationships with business owners, CEO’s of successful companies, professors. Universities need to teach their students how to interact with these big personalities by asking them questions without having to be nervous or scared. This person may pick an interest in your idea or concept. Especially in a place like Nigeria where landing a job most times is by “who you know”.
Nevertheless, learning in the university is difficult because you need to work hard on balancing your personal life and your academics together. Just because these skills weren’t offered to you on a golden plate inside the university classroom doesn’t mean you can’t master them on your own. Furthermore, once you do, you would have made the first step towards a successful career, no matter the career path you decide to venture into.
