Osun State was thrown into political turmoil on Monday after Governor Ademola Adeleke abruptly resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), just hours before the party’s scheduled governorship primary election. The unexpected move has intensified the crisis already rocking the party both within the state and at the national level.
A letter dated November 4, 2025, but surfacing publicly on Monday, confirmed Adeleke’s resignation. In the brief but striking statement, the governor cited the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP as the reason for his exit.
“Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party with immediate effect,” the letter read.
Adeleke went on to express gratitude to the party for the platform it provided throughout his political rise, noting: “I thank the People’s Democratic Party for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a Senator (Represented Osun West) and as Governor of Osun State.”
The blow to the PDP deepened when the party’s Osun State Chairman, Sunday Bisi, announced that Tuesday’s primary election would no longer hold, citing deep factional divisions that made the process impossible to conduct.
Bisi further confirmed that Governor Adeleke had withdrawn interest in securing the party’s nomination for a fresh term, a development that leaves the PDP scrambling to find direction in what has become a fast-escalating internal crisis.
Adeleke’s sudden departure marks one of the most dramatic political shifts in Osun’s recent history, raising questions about his next political move and the future of a party now struggling to contain its widening fractures.
