Delta state women protest against Ned Nwoko
The women of Idumuje-Ugboko community of delta state have protested against Ned Nwoko, a former lawmaker and husband to Regina Daniels, a controversial Nollywood actress.
The protest against the former lawmaker was held on Wednesday as he was accused of oppressing the indigenes of the community and using the police to intimidate the citizens, arresting their husbands, son and relatives over land disputes.
According to media reports, the billionaire has allegedly taken over a vast mass of lands running into several hectares and using force to intimidate and harass the owners. The women, under the umbrella of Concerned Women of Idumeje-Ugboko, took to the streets marching with placards to the Delta state government house in Asaba to air their grievances to the government.
The protesters went straight to the state government because they had no confidence in the judgement of the local government. According to them,
“legitimizing illegality through the issuance of customary rights of occupancy on lands under customary dispute and legal litigation”
The women in their petition to Governor Okowa of Delta state said the Ned Nwoko had forcefully possessed ancestral lands from the owners for his commercial use and used force to keep them shut. The Concerned Women of Idumeje-Ugboko said,
“We consider it in the worst interest of the state and humanity to destroy food and cash crop farms and replace them with a golf course while leaving the owners with no alternative but a transition from being landlords to at best, tenants.”
