Edo State Government has on Monday announced the imposition of 24 hours curfew across the state till further notice given the incidence of jailbreak that happened in Benin and incidents of past days in the state.
In a statement signed by Osarodion Ogie, Secretary to the State Government, Governor Godwin Obaseki Parents were advised to warn their children, youths and wards, not to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
It was gathered that some suspected hoodlums on Monday broke into the Benin Prison popularly known as White House and freed several inmates in one of the cells. PUNCH reported that the armed squad of prison officials engaged the suspected hoodlums in gunfire which resulted in some persons sustaining injuries.
The hoodlums, who started gathering along Sapele Road beside the prison as early as 7 am setting bonfires and sending back road users also destroyed the High Court 4 which is beside the prison where the hoodlums vandalised.
They launched their attack when their number had swelled considerably, broke a part of the wall while some climbed the fence into the prison yard. However, the government warned that anyone found outside in violation of the curfew order which begins at 4 pm today will be dealt with.
