President Muhammadu Buhari has finally reacted to the calls for the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS. In a video posted via his Twitter handle on Monday, October 12, Buhari said the disbanding of SARS is only the first step in his administration’s commitment to extensive police reforms.
He noted that the extensive reformation is to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies remains the protection of the lives and livelihood of Nigerians.
President Buhari said his reaction is because of the genuine concerns and agitations by Nigerians about the excessive use of force and wrongful conduct by some SARS operatives.
Also, Buhari vowed to ensure that all the SARS operatives who were responsible for various forms of misconduct are brought to Justice as he also regrets the death of a young man, Jimoh Isiaq, who was shot during the recent #EndSARS protest in Ogbomosho, Oyo State.
The President added that he has given a directive that the circumstances surrounding his death should be investigated.
According to him, the majority of officers in the Nigerian Police Force are hardworking and diligent in performing their duties as he stressed that the few bad eggs should not be allowed to tarnish the image of the Force.
