President Muhammadu Buhari has on Tuesday commissioned the 5,000 barrels per day Waltersmith Modular Refinery in Ibigwe, Imo State.
Buhari during the virtual commissioning said the project is in fulfilment of his government’s Refinery Roadmap.
The President further expressed delight that work is now commencing on the expansion of the capacity of the refinery to 50,000 barrels per day.
According to him, the refinery roadmap was rolled out in 2018, with the ultimate goal of making Nigeria a net exporter of petroleum products.
He added that the Roadmap has four key elements, namely, Rehabilitation of existing refineries, Greenfield Refineries, Co-location and Modular Refining.

Buhari stressed that he was delighted that the Waltersmith Refinery is coming on-stream within two years of the commencement of the Roadmap, and after many years of granting licenses for the establishment of modular refineries.
He added that the establishment of modular refineries in the country will make petroleum products available in the country and eliminate importation.
