We’ve all been there before. OK, some of us have been there before. Desperately trying to regain our old selves after a breakup. Seeking for closure. Coping with our insecurities by wondering of you were the one who messed up, or how you’re aren’t destined to find true love. Let’s not deny, almost every one of us have had these after a bad break up.
So while you’re mourning your relationship by filling your days with activities that may or may not succeed in distracting you from your ex, there are songs which have been proven to heighten your sadness and pain. Therefore, I strongly advice against listening to these three songs after a bad breakup.
As you may know already, music has indubitable psychological effects. Listening to music we love or songs that are associated with our best memories could brighten our moods. Due to the fact that, it causes certain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin are secreted in the brain resulting in feelings of euphoria, joy & bliss.
1. UN BREAK MY HEART- TONI BRAXTON
This classic song pushed me to tears even as a child, before even knowing what a girlfriend meant. I could understand the lyrics so much that I felt pity for the singer. In this song, Toni Braxton pleads to an ex lover to heal her heart and tell her he loves her again. Her voice was so convincing, she put in so much emotion into it. I guess this is what really made listeners connect more to the song.
2. BURN – USHER
“Burn” is a song by American R&B singer Usher, which he wrote with American songwriters Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox(Wikipedia- 2019). In the song, Usher sings about a breakup in a relationship with an older woman. As with other talented RNB singers, Usher’s magical and convincing voice manages to get the song a feel of authenticity that just makes you want to go to break dance in front your exes house, while begging her to take you back.
3. MY HEART WILL GO ON – CELINE DION
This list of sad songs wouldn’t be complete without this notable mention. Although, it isn’t particularly a song about a breakup. It’s a song that shows a woman dealing with grief after the loss of a loved one, accepting the fact that they’re gone and coming to terms with it.
The song says “Despite someone you love going away. You can still love and honor the person, but you don’t have to be stuck in the past. You don’t have to grieve forever”.
Quite interestingly, My heart will go on is filled with such strong emotions and performed with amazing execution by Celine Dion. While some people claim the song is uplifting, others say its just downright depressing to listen to.
