The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, recently sounded a stern warning to the Nigerian Lawmakers in the National Assembly to desist from voting in support of the legalization of cannabis.
Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, the Chairman, NDLEA, stated that the Lawmakers are well aware that if they put their weights behind the bill, pressing for the justification of marijuana smoking in the country, they cannot return to their constituencies.
On Friday, the agency boss, who was in the presidential villa, Abuja, to brief President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue, refreshed the minds of Nigerians on the dangers of cannabis, also popularly referred to as weed or ganja.
NDLEA Cites WHO, Says Nigeria Highest Consumer of Cannabis
The Agency Chairman said the World Health Organisation, WHO reiterated the points on the dangers of cannabis to the brain, stressing it destabilises and affects behaviour, adding that Nigeria is the highest consumer of the substance.
While briefing State House Correspondents on the outcome of his meeting with President Buhari, the former Lagos State military administrator added to the submissions of WHO that cannabis also affects body organs, and at some point can lead to death eventually.
