Some Nigerian music artists have signed for international record label and few days ago, Olamide aka Baddo joined the list of these top artists. Nigerian music industry is really growing due to the effort of our artists who have put the country’s flag on the world music map severally. The likes of Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy has took Afro-beats to the world and international record labels has made them put pen to paper to make our music more global.
Artists get mouthwatering deals when they sign for an international record label. Most of these record labels who have their headquarters in the United States help to propagate their music to a larger audience. It is moving from local champion to become an international superstar. It is, therefore, a great thing for many of these artists to be signed by international record labels.
When these international record labels sign an artist, it shows that he/she knows the music thing very well and it is acceptable. They therefore stand as a gap to make their efforts reach a wider audience. Some Nigerian artists has since been signed by some of these international record label. Have artists have shine brighter and has been making the US Billboards and getting more recognition worldwide.
A List of Nigerian Musicians Who Have Signed for International Record Label
Here are some popular faces in the Nigerian music industry who has put pen to paper for international record labels.
Dbanj: Nigerian entertainer, Dapo Oyebanjo aka Dbanj in 2011 was signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music record label as an artist. Shortly after this, he released the hit song titled ‘Oliver Twist’ that had Kanye West and other music stars in appearance in the visuals. This makes Dbanj a global brand although it was announced in September 2016 that he has been released from GOOD Music.
Wizkid: Starboy Wizkid is one of the biggest artists in Africa today. After making his name with Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), he went on to have his own record label called Starboy Music. The singer has since gone international. He has a deal with RCA records (an affiliate of Sony), and Sony Music.
Davido: David Adeleke aka Davido is one of the best music artists in Africa at the moment. The singer who featured on Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘n’ Out show recently in the US asides owning DMW record label is also signed to Sony Music. Davido have made it to the American Billboard and is really a top international artist from this part of the world.
Burna Boy: 2019 Grammy Nominee, Burna Boy has really helped to move Afro-beats created by Fela-Anikulapo-Kuti to the world. Burna Boy had a very good 2019 as he toured the world with his music and shutting down all of the venue he performed. The ‘Ye’ crooner has a deal with an international record label in the US, Warner Music Group.
Tiwa Savage: African bad girl made this list courtesy of her deal with American record label, Universal Music Group. After a quite number of years with Mavins Records, the sonorous singer pitched tent with UMG. She is also signed to 323 Entertainment. When you have to select African superstars, Tiwa Savage is definitely up the list having learnt her trade in Berklee School of Music in the US and has performed as backup singer for top artists in the world before breaking out.
Olamide: YBNL Nation boss, has been trying to revive his career. He dropped an EP few weeks ago, changed his hairstyle and next, he signed with an international record label. The rapper who has been saying ‘International ni local’ finally got his words fulfilled as Empire Distribution Records & Publishing Inc. got him on their list along with his record label (YBNL). The deal made other artists signed to YBNL Nation ( Fireboy in the contract already) a member of the international record label. Olamide has joined the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Tyga, Snoop Dogg, XXXtencion as artists signed under the US based record label.
