The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, has directed the Commissioner of Police in imo State to fish out the perpetrators behind the Imo Jailbreak and the attacks on Headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Services in the State.
Adamu also ordered the deployment of an additional Police Mobile Force to Imo State. He added that the deployment is to strengthen security in the State and prevent further attacks on security formations.
According to the IGP, preliminary investigations have revealed that the attackers are members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network (ESN.
He added that the gunmen came in their numbers with sophisticated weapons such as General Purpose Machine Guns, Sub-Machine Guns, AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades, Improvised Explosive Devices.
Imo Jailbreak
Adamu stated that police operatives on duty resisted the attackers’ attempt to access the Police armoury at the Headquarters.
He opined that the Police armoury is intact, adding that a Police Constable sustained a minor bullet wound on his shoulder.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for IPOB, Emma Powerful, has cleared the air over allegations that the group members orchestrated the imo jailbreak.
Powerful noted that IPOB and ESN members were not involved in the attack in Owerri Imo State, adding that it is not their mandate to attack security personnel or prison facilities.
However, he challenged the federal government and the press to stop linking IPOB and ESN to the Imo jailbreak.
