The Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, disclosed that his administration had spent N16 billion on primary education.
Fayemi said this yesterday in a visit by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), led by Dr Hamid Bobboyi, the board’s Executive Secretary.
He said the state government had spent so much developing education in the state by Renovating old schools, building new ones and building teachers capacity.
He said there had been an increase in primary and secondary schools enrolment in the state within the first two and half years of his administration.
The governor commended the executive secretary of UBEC on the excellent job the commission has been doing.
He reiterated that the past administration in the state neglected the need for educational development, thereby causing the state ranking in education to drop to the barest minimum.
He, however, said he is happy that the state has recovered and moved up to its rightful position within the short period of his return to the office.
He also promised that his administration would continue to make schools accessible to all Ekiti children without walking a long distance.
Fayemi: You Don’t Need a University Degree
Governor Fayemi reiterated the efforts of his administration towards e-learning. “I know that e-learning is a major interest, and we are one of the beneficiaries of those schools.”
“We’ve always been passionate about e-learning; during my first term, I know one of the projects we focused on was to make available solar laptops per child in our Junior Secondary Schools.”
He continued, “which of course had programme, curriculum loaded into them and Samsung also then donated a Samsung Engineering Centre for the repair of gadgets in our Technical College here in Ado-Ekiti.”
He said literacy and numeracy need to be tackled as the core of education and not tertiary education. “For someone to be able to live a life of worth, you don’t have to have a university degree, if you are properly trained in basic education level, and that is an area that we have concentrated.”

The executive secretary of UBEC also commended Governor Fayemi’s administration for the resource channelled towards education.
Bobboyi also urged other state governments to embrace e-learning to ensure everyone leverages information and communication technology.
He also promised that the UBEC would continue to assist states in repositioning their essential education development.
