Temilade Openiyi, a Grammy-winning Nigerian artist known as Tems, shared that she had to postpone the launch of her first album due to significant health issues “severe illness”, without giving further details about the illness.
Tems, who gained global recognition in 2020 after being featured on Wizkid’s summer hit ‘Essence’, revealed in a recent interview with the New York Times that her first album was initially planned for release in 2021 but was delayed because of an illness that required surgery and six months of recovery.
The diva, who received an Oscar nomination, clarified that she ultimately dropped her second extended play, ‘If Orange Was a Place’, as a substitute.
Getting back to good health after her illness partly influenced her latest music, which she mentioned was focused on embracing life with a warrior mentality.
“Being a warrior is about not giving up,” she said. “Even if they cut your leg, you walk on your knees, you fight on your knees using what you have — and that’s good enough.”
Tems highly anticipated and long-awaited first album, ‘Born In The Wild’, is set to be released on June 7. Additionally, she is commencing her first global headline tour in June.
