The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended Chima Anthony Nwigwe, who is believed to be the leader of a hacking syndicate targeting banks. Alongside Nwigwe, three other suspects were taken into custody: Effiong Victor Emmanuel, Mohammed Bello Mahmud—managing director of Downstone Ultimate Limited—and Daminan Ali. The group faces serious charges including conspiracy, unauthorized access to banking computer systems, and the fraudulent withdrawal of depositors’ funds.
According to a statement from the EFCC, the arrests were made during a sting operation in Abuja, following actionable intelligence regarding the suspects’ alleged activities. The commission reported that the group had been involved in compromising the databases of various commercial banks, leading to fraudulent transfers and withdrawals across multiple digital platforms.
The EFCC emphasized that the suspects will be charged in court once investigations are completed, underscoring the agency’s commitment to tackling financial crimes and safeguarding the integrity of the banking sector.
