Lead British International School located in Abuja finds itself in a dire situation as video leaks of a female student being bullied.
The student identified as Namtira Bwala, was seen in a video being slapped by a fellow female student.
The bully has been identified as Maryam Hassan.
It may seem as though, she was telling Ms Bwala not to block her hand.
After the death of Sylvester Oromoni due to bullying, you would think other schools would learn from that and strengthen their anti-bullying rules.
Lead British International School ranks as the 24th most expensive school in Nigeria, according to Legit. The parents pay an estimated 1.5M per annum for a child’s tuition.
With such money being paid, it is absurd that the school will not have structures in place to combat bullying.
While Lead British International School tried to salvage their reputation, with a press statement, they were hit with yet another leaked video.
In the video, a male student is being bullied by another male student while other students look on. The students are seen to be speaking Hausa. In this instance, the names of the students have yet to be released.
You would think this would be the end of the bullying videos from this expensive school, but it is not. Another video surfaced of Namitra Bwala being bullied yet again by allegedly the same Maryam Hassan.
In this video, she is being slapped as she is sitting next to a boy, who seems to be smiling, laughing or maybe just scared to speak up.
The boy has also received flack alongside Ms Hassan for remaining silent in the face of injustice. While this might be a good tactic to compel others to speak out when they see injustice and defend the defenceless, we must remember to be careful not to tow too close the line of bullying the boy, so as not to be guilty of the same crime we are persecuting.
The school has yet to respond to the video of the boy or the other resurfaced video. While the school scrambles for an explanation as to why one should pay an estimated 1.5 Million Naira and be maltreated in this way, a chat has been linked to uncovering the shortcomings and lackadaisical nature of the school authorities.
The chat seems to be written by a student of the school. They accuse the school of not addressing their bullying issues.
The text recounts a situation in which a female student brought a knife or paper cutter and sliced the hand of a male student. They claim the school authorities only gave the bully, a 2 days suspension because they had been paid off. The boy ended up leaving the school.
The narrator further raises concern that the school covers bullying incidents and their major punishment for the crime is simply packing dustbins.
They also reveal that parents have also failed as they do not believe their children.
“Our parents think we are being dramatic and stuff”, they wrote.
The bullies, Parents and Lead British International School are urged to be held responsible for bullying.
The videos and pictures continue to circulate online as social media activists continue to press on that Maryam Hassan be arrested, alongside the boys bullying the other student.
They demand Justice for Namitra!
