The coronavirus pandemic may result in a loss of about 13 million jobs in Nigeria according to the World Food Programme of the United Nations. In their reveal, Nigerian needs immediate financial intervention to rescue the economy as many citizens in Nigeria are currently undergoing severe hardship as a result of the virus.

The Senior Spokesperson of WFP, Elisabeth Byrs revealed in an official statement that there is a need of about $182m to sustain survival aids in Nigeria in the next six months. In her opinion, the Nigerian population has more people in the informal sector and as it stands, they are the most hit with the impact of the coronavirus. Elizabeth stated that about 3.8million may be lost in the informal sector.

Also, speaking on the welfare of Nigerians in the North East who are inflicted by conflict and are going through extreme hunger. She explained that they are the most vulnerable in the nation at the moment. They are currently on life support and need a lot of assistance to keep surviving.
She revealed that her organization is currently distributing two months’ worth of food and nutrition assistance to the persons in IDP camps. Elizabeth also added that WFP will continue to cater to over three million vulnerable individuals in Abuja, Kano and Lagos while they scale up activities in the North East.
