In a distressing turn of events, bandits have abducted at least 16 individuals in Bena village and its surrounding areas within the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State. This incident highlights the escalating security challenges faced by rural communities.
Lawali Umar, the Secretary of the Security Committee in Wasagu, confirmed the attack to Channels TV, stating that the victims were ambushed while working on their guinea corn farms. “The bandits ambushed victims working on their guinea corn farms and took them hostage,” Umar reported.
In a separate incident, bandits also targeted the Tudun Wada area, where six people were taken hostage. Fortunately, a response from army personnel led to a confrontation with the assailants, resulting in the successful repulsion of the attack and the rescue of the six abducted individuals.
While some of the 16 originally kidnapped managed to escape, approximately nine remain in captivity, with the bandits demanding an undisclosed ransom for their release.
Umar has urged the Kebbi State Government to enhance security measures in vulnerable areas, specifically mentioning Yar Maitaba, Mai Rai Rai, and Tungar Sabo, which he described as known strongholds for the bandits. “We commend the state government’s efforts against banditry, but with the guinea corn harvest season upon us, our farmers need better security,” he emphasized.
The recent spate of abductions underscores the urgent need for improved security in Kebbi State, as communities grapple with the threat posed by armed groups. Local officials and residents call for more proactive measures to protect farmers and ensure regional safety.
