The Christian Association of Nigeria has reacted to the recent statement credited to the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.
Mallam Garba had opined that President Buhari, not being intimidated by secessionists, which he further described as a display of fake arrogance.
Reacting, the Vice-Chairman of the Association in the Northern region, Rev. John Hayab, noted that history would not be kind to President Buhari if Nigeria breaks up under his administration.
However, Hayab urged Buhari to tackle the factors responsible for agitations for Nigeria’s break up, noting that things are not working well in Nigeria.
According to CAN, it is worrisome that many groups in Nigeria are clamouring for secession instead of working to ensure that Nigeria grows as a big, united, dependable and robust nation.
The Association reiterated that the current realities in Nigeria had created room for more people and interest groups to seek secession from what they see as a nation without hope or a future.
CAN Advises Buhari
CAN advised Buhari to come up with measures to convince Nigerians that he means well and indeed in charge of the nations’ affairs.
You will recall that Shehu had earlier opined that the people calling for secession could not bully or intimidate President Buhari.
According to the Presidential spokesman, those calling for secession are doing so for their selfish interests. He further stated that the most credible faction of the pan Yoruba group, Afenifere, had announced that the group does not support the calls for secession.
