There are far greater things in life that should take your breath away! Say NO to TOBACCO!
Over 40% of all tobacco-related deaths are from lung diseases like cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and tuberculosis.
The focus of the world No Tobacco Day 2019 is on “tobacco and lung health.” The campaign will increase awareness on the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health. From cancer to chronic respiratory disease.
The fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people is being emphasized today. The campaign serves as a call to action, advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption and engaging stakeholders across multiple sectors in the fight for tobacco control.
There is no safe level of tobacco use. The use of any drug always carries some risk, and tobacco is no exception to this. Tobacco is a slow killer, its side effects are slow and highly deadly.
The tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced. Killing more than 8 million people a year. More than 7 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 1.2 million are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
Unfortunately, addiction to tobacco is usually the cause of death, and we all know that once a person is addicted, the person has gone beyond the capacity to help himself. They now require professional assistance and most of them don’t want to see a professional. Studies show that few people understand the specific health risks of tobacco use. Among smokers who are aware of the dangers of tobacco, most want to quit. Counseling and medication can more than double the chance that a smoker who tries to quit will succeed.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) is committed to fighting the global tobacco epidemic. The WHO introduced a practical way to implement its movement against tobacco:
- Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies
- Protect people from tobacco use
- Offer help to quit tobacco use
- Warn about the dangers of tobacco
- Enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship
- Raise taxes on Tobacco
By doing all those, WHO believes that the number of people affected by tobacco use will significantly reduce.
As I’ve said, there are far greater things in life that should take your breath away, we should try to discourage its use any further.
