Following the threat to embark on nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC and the agreement reached with the Federal Government, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC has ordered the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) in the country to suspend the September 1 new tariff.
According to the NERC, the Multi-Year Tariff Order 2020 that was earlier issued to the 11 DISCOs have been suspended for a period of 14 days between September 28 and October 11, 2020.
The 11 DISCOs are Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Benin Electricity Distribution Company, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and Jos Electricity Distribution Company.
Others are Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Kano Electricity Distribution Company, Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electricity Electric Plc, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company and Yola Electricity Distribution Company.
In a statement signed by the NERC Chairman, James Momoh, the Commission said all tariffs for end-use customers and market obligations of the DISCos during the 14-day suspension shall be computed on the basis of rates applicable as at August 31, 2020.
The commission also announced the decision in a tweet which reads “For anyone who may have missed it, NERC has issued an Order to the DisCos suspending the recent review in tariffs for 14 days in line with the FG’s agreement with the Labour Union. During the suspension, all tariffs shall be computed on the rates applicable as at August 31, 2020.
You will recall that the Federal Government has agreed that the recent review in the electricity tariffs would be suspended by the NERC for a period of 14-days following a joint communique issued by the federal government.
