President Muhammadu Buhari has advised West African leaders to stop elongating their tenure in office adding that such act is becoming a source of trouble in the region.
The Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu made this known in a tweet on Monday, September 7.
It was gathered that Buhari made the call when he participated in the 57th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Niamey, Niger Republic.
He stated that African leaders need to adhere to the constitutional provisions of their countries, particularly on term limits which he described as one area that generates crisis and political tension in our sub-region.
The President added that related to the call to shun tenure elongation is the need to guarantee free, fair and credible elections.
According to Buhari, credible elections are the bedrock for democracy to be sustained in the African sub-region, just as the need for adherence to the rule of law.
