A Nigerian Lesbian love film titled ‘Ife’ is set to be released online to avoid ban from censorship board.
The movie producer, Pamela Adie said the movie, ‘Ife‘ which is a Yoruba word for ‘Love‘ would be released online to avoid any possible move by censors to ban it.
A trailer of the lesbian love film was released online in July which shows ladies discussing their love and, as one character phrased it, the fear of being forced to choose between our family and happiness.
The topic discussed in the lesbian love film is a controversial one in Nigeria, where same-sex relationships are theoretically punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
The lesbian film producer, Adie said ”I really feel that the censor’s board is playing a big part in stopping these kinds of stories from coming to the big screen… and it is just really creativity”
Defending the project, Adie said’‘ the role of film is not to say ‘this is right, or not’. I think that the role of film, and a filmmaker, is to portray reality as it is”
One of the protagonists, Uzoamaka Aniunoh added ” ‘Ife’ offers a glimpse into the everyday lives of people in same-sex relationships. I don’t feel like it is bold. I feel like it is ordinary”.
The producer, Pamela Adie, is yet to reveal the date for the online release of the lesbian film that features Uzoamaka Aniunoh and Cindy Amadi.
