Nigeria has recorded a major development in healthcare after doctors successfully carried out a complex operation using technology that allowed a surgeon to work remotely.
The procedure involved a cancer patient in Abuja who needed a kidney tumour removed. Instead of the surgeon being physically present in the operating room, the operation was performed remotely by a specialist based in Ogun State.
The groundbreaking procedure was made possible through satellite internet technology, which provided the connection needed for the surgeon to control the robotic equipment from a different location.
During the operation, the surgeon remotely guided the robotic system to remove the cancerous tumour from the patient’s kidney. The procedure is being described as Nigeria’s first successful tele-robotic surgery, marking an important step in the country’s use of advanced medical technology.
