Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has spoken about his plans for Nigerian youths if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the statement on Saturday during a political gathering in Kaduna, where he appeared alongside his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso. He focused on unemployment, business opportunities and the need to increase production in Nigeria
According to Obi, his administration would encourage young Nigerians to become more involved in farming and small businesses. He said the government would support young people in finding productive ways to earn a living and build their futures.
The former Anambra State governor also said Nigeria needs to move away from an economy that depends heavily on consumption and focus more on producing goods and creating jobs.
Obi said that if elected, his government would only borrow money for investments rather than using loans to fund consumption. He argued that investing in productive areas could help create more employment opportunities for Nigerians.
He also spoke about the country’s drug problem, linking youth unemployment to the increasing number of young people getting involved with drugs. Obi called for stronger laws against people who import and distribute illegal drugs.
He proposed life imprisonment for drug importers whose activities harm young Nigerians.
Obi further compared Nigeria with Indonesia, saying that although Indonesia has a larger population, more of its young people are engaged in employment and productive activities.
His comments form part of his wider campaign message ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with job creation, investment and production among the issues he has highlighted.
