The World Health Organization, W.H.O has organised a press conference on the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in Africa.
During the conference, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti noted that the African continent is facing a second wave in the COVID-19 pandemic with more than 3.3 million cases and 81,000 deaths so far.
Moeti said the first epidemic peak in July was surpassed in December adding that cases accelerate faster.
According to her, while it was always essential to access the vaccines, it’s now more critical than ever.
The WHO Boss further stated that the hoarding of COVID-19 vaccines in Africa would only prolong the ordeal and delay Africa’s recovery.
Moeti added that it would be profoundly unjust if the most vulnerable Africans are forced to wait for vaccines while lower-risk groups in rich countries are made safe.
She disclosed that the CEPI vaccines, Gavi and W.H.O, lay the groundwork for equitable access to the vaccines.
Meanwhile, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC has issued a strong warning over an alleged fake Coronavirus, COVID-19 Vaccines in the country.
The Director-General of the agency, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye alerted Nigerians of the circulation of fake vaccines.
However, she cautioned the general public against the use of any COVID-19 vaccines without the agency’s approval.
