Alternative Routes For Users Of Third Mainland Bridge

Following the announcement about the partial closure of the third mainland bridge in Lagos State, many road users in the state have expressed concern about the inconveniences the closure would bring upon them and their businesses.

Meanwhile, as announced by the Federal and Lagos State governments, the closure is imperative to carry out maintenance work on the bridge beginning from Friday, July 24, 2020.

According to the Federal Controller of Works in the state, Mr Olukayode Popoola, the bridge was last closed for repairs in August 2018 for three days of investigative maintenance check following reports about some weak joints of the bridge.

It was gathered that the bridge, which starts from Oworonshoki and links Apapa-Oshodi Expressway as well as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island is the busiest in Africa.

As part of efforts aimed at developing a traffic management plan, the Lagos State Government would be working with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) as well as the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) to manage traffic during the period.

Also, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde has assured that necessary measures would be put in place to reduce gridlocks during partial closure of the bridge.

Everyevery.ng gathered that the Lagos State and Federal Government has mapped out accessible routes road users can take to reduce travel time during the partial closure of the Third Mainland Bridge.

Some alternative roads are Carter Bridge through Iddo through Oyingbo to join Adekunle ramp inward Oworonsoki.

Moreso, motorists could ply Ijora Olopa through Western Avenue to Ikorodu Road.

Priority would be given to people on the Mainland connecting the Island in the morning to use the bridge while those living on the Island would be required to use alternative routes.

Also, commuters leaving Lagos Island to the Mainland would have priority to use the bridge in the evening to reduce congestion.

However, road users have been advised to use either BRT or water transportation, the partial closure of the bridge between Friday, July 24, 2020, and January 24, 2021.
