‘The War Is Over’ Soyinka Speaks On Relationship With Gowon

Nobel laureate and playwright, Professor Wole Soyinka has cleared the air over an alleged cold war between him and former head of state, Yakubu Gowon, who detained him between 1967 and 1969.

While speaking on the relationship between him and Gowon, Soyinka said he did not hold anything against the ex-head of state.

The foremost Nigerian writer further stated that they communicate whenever possible adding that Gowon came for his birthday in Abeokuta and also tendered a public apology.

Soyinka Speaks On Relationship With Gowon

Soyinka noted that the people he finds difficult to forgive are those who lied against him as he stressed that he detests liars.

He further explained that Gowon had on various occasions made efforts to meet him so they could talk when he was in Europe and America.

You will recall that the Gowon government had on August 1967 arrested Soyinka and put him in solitary confinement.
