Muslin Rights Concern, MURIC intercedes for 54 soldiers. Following the recent development regarding the presidential pardon granted to 2600 prisoners by President Buhari, MURIC has come up intercede for the soldiers.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, the soldiers were earlier sentenced to death by firing squad in 2015 for mutiny. The sentence, however, was commuted to 10 years imprisonment in 2019. The soldiers are currently serving their time.
Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Director of MURIC commended President Buhari for the pardon and has solicited for the release of the soldiers.
“We remind those who are to implement the presidential pardon to include the 54 soldiers of the Nigerian Army who are currently serving a 10-year jail term.
“Some of the 54 soldiers are in Kirikiri and Ikoyi correctional centres. We urge the presidential team to visit those places.
“We hereby appeal to the committee handling the implementation of the presidential amnesty to consider them,” he said.
