President Buhari Orders DisCos To End Estimated Billing

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the electricity distribution companies, DisCos to put an end to an estimated billing in the country.

The President also approved a one-year waiver of import levy on electricity meters, so that Nigerians who do not have meters can be supplied as early as possible at a reasonable cost.

This was contained in a statement shared on the official Twitter handle of the Nigerian Presidency.

According to the statement, the Federal Government is working to ensure that Electricity distribution companies, DisCos commit to increasing the number of hours of electricity supply per day and quality of service.

The Presidency further revealed that a mass metering program is underway adding that President Buhari remains committed to the protection of poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC has revealed that it has no plan to raise electricity tariff for poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

In a press statement signed by the Chairman, NERC, James Momoh, the commission reiterated commitment to protecting its customers.

While debunking the media report that there is an increase in tariff for Nigerians, the commission stated that going forward, tariff review will only follow service-based principles.

According to the NERC, under the service-based principles, DisCos will only be able to review the tariff rate for customers when they consult with customers.
