Following the Okada ban decree in Lagos State that is supposed to commence on June 1, 2022, the government has already started enforcing the law and has even seized several motorcycles operating beyond the previous allowed jurisdiction.

According to the Lagos State Government, the seizure of commercial motorcycles by the State’s Task Force will continue, despite the authorities mentioning a given deadline, adding that it would not tolerate the actions of the riders taking laws into their hands.

Earlier, the authorities Madre it clear that some Okada riders are full time robbers putting the lives of residents at risk and also break the law with the mindset that nobody can question their actions.

Reacting, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had on Wednesday issued a fresh total ban on Okada riders’ operations in six Local Government Areas, which are Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Apapa, and Surulere.

Reiterating this order, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, who issued a press release regarding the issue, said said that the deadline does not invalidate the provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

He hinted that the Law stated that ”no persons shall ride, drive or propel a motorcycle or tricycle on a major highway within the state, and any person in contravention of this provision commits an offence” and would be made to face the wrath of the law.
