The Nigerian government has pressed fresh charges against the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
According to Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF and Minister of Justice, the court would be hearing cases on murder, terrorism, banditry and criminality, adding that the ongoing trial has taken another course.
The AGF accused Kanu of committing heinous crimes, including killing Fulani cattle rearers and force personnel, amongst others. He described the Fulani herdsmen as innocent and only catering for their cattle.
Meanwhile, he warned members of IPOB to stay away from the next court sitting in Abuja. Malami said Kanu’s lawyers would be permitted around the court premises on the trial day. EveryEvery.ng gathered that no branded IPOB T-shirt or caps would be allowed within the court area.
You will recall that the Department of State Services, had on November 23, 2015, filed cases of intimidation, criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms and membership of an illegal organisation against Kanu. The DSS opined that the allegations breach the penal code of Section 97, 97B and 397.
Meanwhile, the legal practitioner representing Kanu has revealed the discussion he had with the IPOB leader after visiting him in the custody of the DSS. The Lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, said the meeting he held with Kanu lasted for about four hours.
According to Ejiofor, Nnamdi Kanu is cheerful in the custody of the DSS, adding that his interaction with the IPOB leader was fulfilling.
The legal practitioner, in a tweet, stated that Kanu looks forward to overcoming his present predicament sooner than later, as he stressed the need for unity and tolerance on all sides.
EveryEvery.ng reported that security sources had revealed plans by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra to break Kanu out of detention after Kanu reportedly asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to transfer him from custody the DSS to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
