The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC has raised the alarm over the danger of using poisonous chemicals in food processing and preservation. The Director General of the Agency, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, said formalin, snipers chemicals are dangerous and could lead to death.
According to the NAFDAC Boss, the Agency has discovered that many fish, Kilishi and other meat sellers use formalin to preserve their products.
Adeyeye noted that formalin is used to keep dead bodies. She warned that the misuse of chemicals on food products could lead to many severe diseases and death.
NAFDAC warned that anyone arrested would face the full wrath of the law. Meanwhile, the Agency said it has also uncovered how some criminal elements conveys vegetable oils to the markets with kerosene or fuel tankers.
She advised Nigerians to report such activities and be wary of red palm oil, noting that palm oil traders add a dangerous chemical call azo dye to make it reddish and appealing.
Adeyeye also warned Nigerians to stop patronizing medicine hawkers at markets, motor parks and other public places.
She said buying medicines from hawkers who carry drugs on trays and move around selling them is dangerous. According to her, Drugs sold under harsh are not effective and harmful. Adeyeye advised Nigerians to buy drugs from registered patent medicine stores.
