On Wednesday 4, the Lagos State Government said that it had invested over N2 billion towards combatting improper waste disposal.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State noted that his government would utilise the funds to rehabilitate dumpsites in various parts of the state.
The Governor expressed these views at the Lagos House in Ikeja while unveiling one hundred and two compactor trucks and another one hundred double dino bins.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed that he recently invested N1 billion in constructing three new transfer loading stations to provide the necessary infrastructure to deliver solid waste management services effectively.
In the administration’s governing agenda, encapsulated as T.H.E.M.E.S., he said solid waste management represented a crucial part of the Health and Environment pillar.
He advised that the quality of our environment directly impacts the quality of the lives we live, adding that a clean environment is a powerful weapon against COVID-19 and other public health challenges.
According to him, his administration promises to empower the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, L.A.W.M.A., to effectively drive the elimination of waste accumulation in Lagos and the adoption of recycling state-wide.
Sanwo-Olu said the decision by his administration to tackle the waste menace in the state calls for a wholesale change of attitude towards the environment, beginning with basic hygiene at home, proper domestic waste management and ultimately, environment-friendly practices.
