Tottenham Hotspur has completed the signing of Brazilian defender Emerson Royal from Barcelona for 30m euro (£25.8m) on a five-year contract. The 22-year-old spent the past two seasons at Betis, where he scored five goals in 79 games.
Barcelona brought him back for a reported 9m euros (£7.7m) in June. Emerson featured in Brazil’s run to the Copa America final this summer. This happened because Serge Aurier left the club on a mutual agreement to terminate his contract a year early.
The Ivory Coast right-back played 110 times for Spurs after a £23m move from PSG in 2017 but had effectively dropped to fourth-choice. Emerson will now compete for the right-back role with Japhet Tanganga and Matt Doherty.
The Brazilian played more minutes than any other Real Betis player last season as they finished sixth in La Liga to qualify for the Europa League. He has won four caps for his country since making his debut in 2019.
