Award-winning Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up on why he thinks Nigerians are not accepting his success despite his numerous recognitions.
The 29-year-old songwriter recently celebrated another feat as he featured in the theme song for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar alongside two American R&B singers Aisha and Trinidad Cardona.
Despite tweeting the achievement as a win for Nigeria, Davido was not congratulated by most of his celebrity colleagues.
In a recent chat with the “IONWANNATALK” podcast, he said he is not accepted because of his wealthy background as the criteria for acceptance include a grass to grace story he does not have.
Davido unfollowed fellow musicians, Wizkid, 2baba and Burnaboy on Instagram shortly after posting his World Cup feature, alleging envy in the music scene.
Davido said, “Not to be cocky but when next is the industry going to see another Davido? Let’s just be honest, a child from where I come from, hustled, suffered.
“I can tell you that I’ve suffered more than a lot of people that don’t have money. And I’ve been able to build what I built. It’s not going to happen in a long time.
“I don’t have the grass to grace story. And for Nigerians to accept you without that is usually very hard.
“That’s why I’m asking you because I know. I don’t think there’s anything the industry needs because it’s always going to be the same thing. There’s always going to be envy.”
