Biola stopped and looked at her friend “don’t take this personal… I can’t bear to stay in this town, what if I run into him? What will I do? I am too hurt to be reminded of my actions every day. I did something horrible and now that I am paying for it; I’d rather do that away from the town that I did the horrible thing in” she explained.
“I hope you know that no matter what happens in this life, I will always be there for you” tears followed Efe’s words “my friend” Biola said wiping Efe’s tears with her hands “don’t waste your tears on me… I don’t deserve it. You are my greatest ally and I will never forget it” they hugged.
Efe knew that she was never going to see Biola again… it wasn’t a belief, it was a knowing she had and couldn’t shake. And since everything she did to stop her from going was unsuccessful she resigned to helping her friend pack.
Biola left that night and two hours later, she was on a flight to the town of her birth… Abuja. She put her things in a hotel room and left; she went to the hotel bar. She couldn’t bear staying on her own in a room for long especially at night, so she sat in the bar till dawn; drinking and waiving off every man who tried to talk to her or buy her a drink.
“I can buy my own drink!” she yelled a man who won’t quit flinging her glass of whisky at him. “Don’t worry I will pay for it, I have a lot of money” she said to the bar tender when the glass shattered on the floor. When she was done at the bar, she went back to her hotel room but still couldn’t stay; so she left again. She got in a cab and went to see Rev. Sis. Aloysius.
Sis. Aloysius was happy to see her as always and so was Biola; as they sat to talk, Biola took a good look at her and realized how much she had aged “time has really gone by” she said softly “indeed my child” Sis. Aloysius replied.
Biola imagined that the older Sis. Aloysius got the less time they had together and that motivated her to tell her everything that happened when she went back to Lagos.
“You almost got married?” Sis. Aloysius asked with a fading excitement “what happened? And to who?” “To Seyi… the guy I told you about” her words sent Sis. Aloysius into a calm frenzy.
“No no no no…. not that man again. I thought you were done with him?” she cried “I thought so too but things change” Biola was shocked at Sis. Aloysius’ reaction. “What is it? Why are you reacting this way?” Biola looked puzzled. It was time for Aloysius to confess… it was time for her to tell her the truth that she had kept from her all these years; the hardest confession she would ever do in her life.
And so she did. She told Biola that she was her Biological mother and told her the entire story up until the accident that supposedly killed her father. “All these years, you let me believe that my mother was gone” Biola was upset, she refused everything that Sis. Aloysius had to say to justify her actions and stood to leave.
“That’s not all!” Sis. Aloysius cried, the last part of this confession felt like it was going to kill her. Biola waited “the last time you were here, I discovered that Francis… your father is still alive but he now goes by the name Seyi” Biola fell to her knees.
“I am sorry, I should have told you this the last time you were here” Sis. Aloysius begged “I am carrying his baby” Biola revealed “No! no no no” was all Sis. Aloysius could say “I am having this baby” Biola announced and left… ignoring everything Sis. Aloysius was trying to say to her.
On the ride back to the hotel, she noticed a convoy of four cars behind her but she ignored; it was a common thing to see convoys in a state filled with politicians.
But before she could go back to thinking of what Sis. Aloysius revealed to her, the sound of gunshots made her sit up. She looked at the driver to ask him what was going on but he had caught a bullet and was already dead; she looked at the window and caught a glimpse of two men shooting at her and within seconds her body was harbouring five bullets and life as she knew it …. Was over.
