In the wake of the calls for scrapping the Special Anti Robbery Squads, SARS by many Nigerians who considered the squad as a threat to the society, a former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has highlighted the need for sanity among SARS operatives.

Atiku, who bared his mind in a post on his Twitter handle said the squad has metamorphosed into n oppressor of the Nigerian masses instead of confronting violent crimes in the society.

According to him, it is expedient that the activities of SARS are reviewed to ensure that the rogue elements are excised from the unit and sanity returned to its operations.

The tweet reads “The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Police was set up to confront violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other related crimes. However, the unit has today morphed into an oppressor of the Nigerian masses who strive every day for a better life.”

Atiku condemned what he described as the cruel actions of SARS operatives against the masses as he also urged the government to rise to the occasion and nip this monstrosity in the bud with the seriousness it deserves.

Also, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has described reports about the continued harassment of Nigerians by SARS operatives as disheartening. He, however, called on the Federal government to put an end to reprehensible activities of SARS officers.

He noted that a situation where the officers of the Police Force become a threat to the lives and property of the citizens they swore to protect is condemnable and unacceptable.

In the same vein, a former lawmaker, Senator Ben Murray Bruce said the very body tasked with ensuring the protection of life and property is denying Nigerians their rights adding that every citizen owns the right to life, liberty and happiness.
