An Islamic Attire: Jalabiya

Share

One popular attire worn by the Arabs is a long garment known as ‘Jalabiya’ or ‘Jellabiya.’ It is a traditional garment that has its origin in Egypt and has been worn in many Arabic countries as well as Muslim dominated territories of the world.

Jalabiya differs from the Arabic ‘thawb’ (another wear) in that it has a wider cut, no collar (in some cases, no buttons), longer and wider sleeves. The native wearers of this attire (both male and female) in the Nile valley of Egypt make the garment’s sleeves to be very wide and sewn into pockets. Farmers use it to store small items such as tobacco or money. It is a major Islamic attire you would see in mosques. Turbans are used to complement this garment.

Islamic scholars and religious people in West Africa and Nigeria are not left out in adorning this wear. It is very popular in Northern Nigeria where there are many Muslims and some have even adorned it stylishly like the Arabians.

These days, the attire has been adorned not only by the Muslims but many other people. Jalabiya is now in vogue in the fashion world. Fashionistas really like to dress as a Qatari oil merchant in this flowing garment. The garment comes in different color most especially white, black, grey and dark green.

The fabric used may be light or thick which makes it possible to be worn any season of the year. It also comes with embroideries to make it look more stylish. One thing about Jalabiya is that it is always long and wide and can be used to keep things such as bundles of money, guns, and so on without being noticed.

You can bring your fashion game to the next level by adorning a Jalabiya. If you haven’t gotten one, you can get one from the nearest market or mosque to you. It is also available on sales in many online markets. Remember looking good is a good business, you just have to rock your world by looking the best of it.
