Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has resigned as the head coach of Real Madrid for the second time in his coaching career. Real Madrid did not win any trophy this season as their culture is to sack any manager who goes a whole season without a trophy. The Frenchman has decided to resign before the club will sack him.
Spanish La Liga trophy was taken from them by city rivals Atletico Madrid as they failed to defend the title. Real Madrid released a statement saying they must now respect Zinedine Zidane’s decision. The club thanked the 48-years-old manager for his “professionalism, dedication and passion over the years and what he means to Real Madrid.
Zidane played for Real Madrid from 2001 to 2006, won three consecutive Champions League titles and a La Liga title in his first period as manager between 2016 and 2018. His first departure from the club was in May 2018, but he returned ten months after and secured a second La Liga title last season.
Real Madrid said Zidane is one of their great icons, and his legacy extends beyond what he has achieved as a coach and player. “He is aware that he has a place in the hearts of the Real Madrid fans and that he will always have a home at Real Madrid.”
Real Madrid finished two points behind Atletico in La Liga as they failed to win a trophy for the first time since 2009-10. The manager has now joined Antonio Conte, who resigned as Inter Milan head coach.
