Zamfara House of Assembly Set to Impeach Deputy Governor

Members of the Zamfara House of Assembly has started making moves to impeach the State’s Deputy Governor, Barr. Mahdi Aliyu, on grounds of alleged constitutional breaches, wrongdoing or abuse of office.

The process first involved a resolve by the house members to present an impeachment letter to the Deputy Speaker of the house, Nasiru Magarya, on their intentions against the sitting Barr. Aliyu.

Yesterday, act was communicated via a statement issued in Gusau by the spokesman to the legislator, Mustafa Jafaru-Kaura, where it was stated that it is part of the provision of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that empowers legislatures to commence impeachment moves of a governor or his deputy on allegations of constitutional breaches, wrongdoing or abuse of office.

According to Mr Jafaru-Kaura, the aforementioned, has triggered the action of the Deputy Speaker and Chairman House Committee on Public Accounts to forward a formal request notifying the speaker of the House move to impeach Barr. Mahdi Aliyu Muhammad Gusau.

He further pointed out that the Deputy Speaker accused the Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu-Gusau, for alleged constitutional breaches, abuse of office and financial misappropriation, which are all impeachable offences

Responding, the Speaker promised that the assembly would look into the allegations against the deputy governor and act appropriately according to the provisions of the Constitution.
