Workers Plan 7 Days Warning Strike in Kano Over Salary Deductions
Workers in Kano state are making plans to embark on a 7 days warning strike over issues relating to salary deductions. The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, in Kano is raising agitation over 20% deduction in their May salary by the state government due to COVID-19 pandemic.
The Kano State NLC Chairman explained that this is against the new minimum wage law sent to the legislature and dully signed by the president. The state branch of the NLC rejected all the reasons by the state government for deducting their salaries part of which was the coronavirus in Nigeria.
In the 13 man signed communiqué from the Kano State NLC branch, the state government was given an ultimatum to complete the payments. The grace of 14 working days with effect from 27th May 2020 was given by the workers unless they will embark on a 7 days warning strike in Kano.
This may seem to rational as Kano State currently has a high number of coronavirus patients and is in need of more resources as they fight the virus. Also, considering that the workers were not fully at work for most days of the month, this may be the justification for the state government to effect the 20 deductions in the salaries.
