Wikipedia Ranks Nigeria 15th Among Failed States, Ghana Emerges Best African Nation

Wikipedia has ranked Nigeria as the 15th most failed states in the world, out of a total of 177 countries that were surveyed by the free web-based encyclopedia.

Other countries listed as a failed state include Syria, Somalia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Rwanda, Liberia, Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan.

According to the ranking, ten out of the 15 most failed nations were African nations which are Somalia (1st), Zimbabwe (2nd), Sudan (3rd), Chad (4th), Dem. Rep. of Congo (5th), Central African Republic (8th), Guinea (9th), Ivory Coast (11th), Kenya (14th), and Nigeria (15th).

Meanwhile, Ghana emerged the best state in Africa, ranked 124 and classified as moderate state, while USA was 159th and UK 161st on the survey list.

The best five nations, which were described as having the most sustainable state include Norway (177), Finland (176), Sweden (175), Switzerland (174), and Ireland (173)

It was gathered that the index’s ranks are based on twelve indicators of social, economic and political vulnerability hence, measuring a state’s vulnerability to collapse or conflict.

According to the Crisis States Research Centre, a “failed state” is such that can no longer perform its basic security and development functions and that has no effective control over its territory.

Also, Wikipedia stated that a state can be considered as a failed state if the government loses its legitimacy even if it is performing its functions properly.

Meanwhile, for a state to be considered as a stable state, the government must enjoy both effectiveness and legitimacy.
