Following Lionel Messi’s recent win Ballon d’Or award has raised many questions as to why the Argentine won the award ahead of Poland and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski. Many fans feel the player was robbed of the award and given the Paris Saint-German player. Recasting to this, they have been many opinions as to why Messi was given the award.

Lionel Messi’s Ballon d’Or Award Causes Argument

The award took place on Monday night, and the Argentine was named the Ballon d’Or winner for the seventh time in his career, making him the player with the most award. Messi won the Copa America earlier this year with Argentina and won the Copa Del Rey in the Spanish La Liga. He was also the top goal scorer and the player with the most assist in La Liga last season.

Lewandowski, on the other hand, won the German Bundesliga and also the German DFB trophy. He was also the highest goal scorer in Europe. In goal scoring, he outshined Messi and in an assist, which made fans question the choice of the player the award was given to.

Lots of critics think that Bayern Munich and Poland striker Lewandowski, who finished second, should have taken home the trophy. The 33-year-old scored 53 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich in 2021 and was awarded the Striker of the Year prize.

According to reports, once there had been nominations, the personal achievement did not matter anymore; voting now decides the winner after the nomination. Messi had more votes than Lewandowski, but the questions now are if it were based on a vote, then Ngolo Kante would have had more votes than Jurginho as the player is loved by both his opponents and friends.
